Fun to watch, at least if you're into science, engineering and space exploration - http://www.elevator2010.org/ Some of those ribbon-climbing contraptions do pretty well. We are far from an actual elevator to space, as described in Clarke's Fountains of Paradise, but we are on the road. Progress is being made!
